Why Buy Gunner Kennels?
Are you thinking about buying a Gunner Kennel? Our Gunner Kennels Review details all the aspects of the G1 dog crate and if they make sense for you to buy. We cover everything from sizing to durability and everything in-between. Read on to learn everything you could ever want to know about the Gunner Kennel!
What are Gunner Kennels Made From?
Gunner G1 Kennels are made from double walled rotomolded plastic. From our knowledge, Gunner are the only doubled walled plastic dog crates on the market. This material is extremely durable and holds up well against pretty much anything you or your pup could throw at it. The plastic of the kennel is extremely easy to clean. Being double walled also provides superior insulation from cold/warm temperatures when transporting your dog.
Are Gunner Kennels Crash Proof?
Gunner states that all of their kennels are 5 Star Crash tested. If you follow Gunner's Test Videos you know that they put their crates through a lot. We at Suburban K9 wanted to see if Gunner's claims hold up! Check out our review video to see what our results with the Gunner G1 were:
Can a dog break out of a gunner kennel
Clients ask if we think a dog could break out of the Gunner G1 Kennel and while anything is possible we think it would be pretty difficult. If you watched our Gunner G1 Review and pressure test video, you saw that a adult human was unable to kick open the door of the crate. That is a ton of force on door and latch system.
Unlike a lot of other crates on the market the Gunner G1 is a molded design. This means there aren't corners or to fail. The only potential weak points of notable size would be the kennel door. With the latch and pin system there is little chance of the door failing.
You can also add the chew kit if your pup likes to try and bite their way out. The chew kit adds laser cut steel panels to the vent windows and doors. These quickly keep your dog from trying to chew their way out.

Gunner Kennels Retail Location
Gunner does have a single in-person retail location in Nashville, TN. Additional they offer online sales and are you direct to consumer product. This means that if you buy from their online store, they will ship directly to you anywhere in the country. Offering products direct to you keeps their prices lower for a high quality dog crate.
Are Gunner Kennels made in the USA
We really love that all Gunner G1 Kennels are proudly made in Nashville, TN and shipped around the country. Just like Gunner, Suburban K9 is proud to have roots in Nashville.
Are Gunner Kennels warm
The double wall construction of Gunner Kennels makes them the best insulated dog kennels on the market. From our testing the inside of a gunner kennel stayed considerably cooler than a standard plastic kennel on a warm day. Additional in cold weather the kennel stays warmer, especially with your pups body heat helping.
One great tip we found was to keep your kennel inside the night before taking your dog out with it. This will make sure the kennel stays at a comfortable temperature longer for your pup!
Gunner Kennels Divider
One thing we wish that Gunner would solve for is a crate divider. Currently there isn't a great solution to the problem of having a puppy that is going to grow up to be way bigger than they are now. A divider would help elevate issues with potty training a puppy inside the crate.
We have heard of customers using a cooler in the back of the kennel to act as a divider until their pup gets older. While this is an option, make sure that your dog is not trying to chew or destroy anything that you place inside of the crate with them.
Should I Crate My Puppy
We truly believe that every dog should be crated and PAWS certainly agrees with us! If you choose a Gunner Kennel or not. We strongly encourage you to buy a crate for your dog. Gunner G1 Vs. Dakota 283
We did a full review of the Dakota 283, just like the Gunner G1. Overall we like the quality and safety of the G1 over that of the 283. There are some differences between the 2 that you should make sure you consider.
- Lighter - the 283 is considerably lighter than the Gunner G1. We think the extra weight is worth it. If you are looking for a quality lighter alternative the 283 is great.
- Door - Dakota 283 has a metal wire door. We don't find any benefit in this feature.
- Single Molded - the 283 is not double walled so it is not as well insulated or as safe in a crash.
- Single Plastic Handle - The Dakota 283 has a single plastic top handle, the Gunner G1 has 2 rubber handles. These are far more comfortable for carrying the heavier crate.
- Made in USA - They are both made in the USA
- Has drain - Both the Dakota 283 and Gunner G1 have coinvent drains
- Available in different colors - Both are available in multiple colors, but we think the Dakota 283 has some more interesting shades available.
Is a Gunner Kennel Worth It?
We certainly think the Gunner G1 is worthy of an excellent review. Our favorite feature is safety. We want to make sure our pup is as safe as possible while traveling and think that the G1 gives them best chance of being safe in an accident.
