As a dog training company, we often get asked the same questions. “What is the best dog toy for my dog”? “What are some other ways I can keep my dog busy”? “Is there a dog chew toy that will last a long time”? The answer to all of these questions is the same, “Get your dog some tough dog toys that will last” and Benebones are always high on the list. It is one of the best durable dog toys on the market!
Chew Time with a Benebone
Chew time for dogs is super important each and every day. It provides mental and physical stimulation, while keeping your dog busy and out of trouble! We also love antlers, Kong toys, and bully sticks, but Benebones are definitely one of the most cost effective chew toy options on the market.
Benebone for Power Chewers?
Tough breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Mastiffs and German Shepherds are often power chewers and can destroy almost any dog toy. A Benebone will still last them for a good while and provide a lot of enrichment. If your dog is a extremely powerful chewer and you need something even stronger than the Benebone, we highly recommend the Goughnut, which we have also recently reviewed. This is a great toy that is almost impossible to destroy and even offer a lifetime guarantee!
What is a Benebone?
According to the Benebone Website the Benebone is a durable nylon chew toy that is created utilizing natural flavoring. Benebones are proud that each chew is made in the USA. Benebones are a chew toy and are not meant to be eaten or consumed by your dog. The product comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and flavors. We will explore all of the options in detail throughout this review.
Sizes of Benebones
Benebones are made in a variety of sizes to make sure the appropriate product is available for your dog. It is important to get the right size chew toy for your pup. Getting a bone that is too small can lead to a dangerous situation where they try and eat the benebone and it becomes a choking hazard. A Benebone that is too large could lead to your dog not being able to carry the toy and they won't show much interest in it. All Benebones are offered in the following sizes:
Tiny: The Tiny Benebone is listed as being appropriate for dogs under 15 pounds. It is generally offered in a two pack in the Tiny size. We do not usually recommend that customers go with the size Tiny. We have found that the size Small tends to be a better option for individuals with small dogs. The Tiny size seems to be a bit too small and tends to wear out quicker than the size small.
Small: Is recommended for under 30 lbs. As we mentioned when talking about the Tiny, we would recommend the Small size for all small dogs. It offers the right combination of durability and is the appropriate size for small pups.
Medium: The medium is recommended for dogs under 60 pounds and is actually our favorite size chew. It tends to be good for medium to medium-large dogs.
Large: The large is recommended for dogs under 90 pounds and is a great option for large dogs.
Giant: Giant Benebones are listed as being for dogs that weigh under 120 lbs. We generally do not recommend benebones of this size to our customers. We have seen that once the bones become this large they tend to be heavy. The heavy benebones can cause damage to floors and feet when dropped by your dogs.
What Shapes of Benebone are Available?
The Wishbone is a classic Benebone shape and the one we most recommend. It comes in all the sizes listed above. The Wishbone Benebone is offered in Chicken, Bacon, and Real Peanut Butter Flavors. This offers a vast array of options for even the pickiest of dogs to choose from. From our testing the Bacon version seems to be the favorite of most pups, after all who doesn't love Bacon! This shape resembles a chichen's wishbone and has three legs of chewing surface. At the end of each leg, there is a rounded portion which offers plenty of chewing potential for your pup!
The fishbone resembles the body of a fish. Complete with head and tail, the body section is made up of 4 peg like bones. In our opinion this benebone offers the most chewing surface to your dog. They can chew on the head, tail, and each of the 4 individual bone sections. This offers the most longevity of any of the Benebone products. Fishbone comes in the most logical flavor of Salmon. While it makes sense, we wish that this shape was offered in additional flavors as it is our favorite shape, but the limited flavors mean that some dogs might not like it.
While a bone might be the most natural thing for a dog to chew on, the next is a stick. So Benebone offers the Maple Stick and the Bacon Stick. The names refer to the difference in flavor. The Maple is flavored with real maple wood, while the bacon is flavored with the same traditional bacon flavor of the wishbone and other shapes. Each end of the stick has a Y branch giving your dog plenty of chewing potential.
The Zaggler is probably our least favorite shape. It looks like a double sided top, but doesn't really look all that fun. It is probably best suited for dogs that are extremely hard chewers as the two ends of this shape are thicker than the other options. It comes in the same three flavors; Real Chicken, Bacon, and Peanut Butter as the Wishbone, which we would still recommend over the Zaggler.
The Dental Chew comes in the standard 3 flavors of the other options the shape resembles two handles with ribs on them. The ribs are good for helping clean your dogs teeth. However the overall shape is somewhat basic and we think the other options above are much better.
The pawplexer is a very interesting product and we plan a full review of this product on its own. It combines the classic benebone chew toy with the ability to place other treats/toys in the rubberized center. It is available in bacon flavoring only and is the only product we reviewed that comes in 3 sizes (small, medium, and large), although we don't really mind that because we don't recommend the tiny or giant benebones. From what we have seen so far of this product dogs seem to go after whatever you place in the center of the chew toy and then leave to chew toy behind to focus on the prize.
What Dog's is the Benebone Appropriate for?
Dogs have a natural desire to chew and the Benebone satisfies that desire in a positive manner. Properly sized benebones are good for almost all dog sizes. There are however two types of dogs that the product probably is not good for. There are some dogs that don't show an interest in chewing on things. This would mean that the benebone would largely go ignored. The other type of dog is the type that prefers to eat just about everything that they are given. As mentioned above the Benebone is a nylon chew toy and is not meant to be eaten. If you don't know if your dog will try to eat the chew toy we highly recommend watching them closely when given the toy. If they try and eat it, we recommend to take it away from them.
How Long Do Benebones Last?
Benebones will last a good amount of time for most dogs, but the actual duration will depend on how hard of a chewer your dog is. For your hardest chewers the Benebones tend to last between 2-3 weeks. For dogs that show less of a drive to chew, you can probably get a few months out of a benebone before needing to change it out.
When Should you Replace?
Benebones website offers a very helpful replacement chart that details the best time to change out your dog's bone. A good rule of thumb is to remove the bone when an area of more than a sugar cube has been removed by your dog. Wonder how long a Benebone will last before needing replaced?
