What is a Pup Pie?
The original Pup Pie dog treat was created by The Lazy Dog Cookie as a birthday treat for your favorite puppers! The Pup Pie is covered in sprinkles making it look super cute and delicious. Pup-Pies are shaped like a round pie that is already divided into individual segments. This way it is easy for all of your doggy birthday guests to get a piece, without a lot of effort.
What is the Original Pup Pie Made of?
The Original Pup-Pie Birthday pie is made of all natural ingredients. The first three ingredients are listed as oat flour, pumpkin, peanut butter. So it is a good bet that the majority of the treat is made up of these great ingredients.
They go on to list the following additional ingredients: Cane Molasses, Vegetable Glycerin, Cinnamon, Ginger, Palm Oil, Cane Sugar, Vanilla, Sunflower Lecithin, Sodium Bicarbonate, Carnauba Wax & Natural Color.
The sprinkles on the pup pie are said to be made up of real fruit pieces.
Are There Different Flavors of Pup Pies
There are three different Pup-Pies that we have seen available. Two of the pies are for your dog's birthday and are labeled as a special treat for your dog. One box is blue for boys and the other is pink for girl dogs. There is also an Adoptiversary version.
While these are different versions, they are just different packaging. We would like to see actual different flavors of the treat. Lazy Dog does have some different flavored treats, so why not make the pies in different flavors???
Can You Put Candles on Your Pup Pie
The Original Pup Pie is somewhat hard, which makes it easy to snap and portion for your dog guests. This does however make it difficult to get your candles into the pie. We tried a couple of different methods and the best we were able to come up with was using a tooth pick, but it really didn't work great. I would recommend skipping the candles and birthday song with the Pup Pie.

1⁄2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce or 1 small apple diced
1⁄2 teaspoon Cornstarch
1 Egg

Equally divide the filling mixture into the cups.
Lay strips of dough in a criss cross pattern on top of the filling.

Local Dog Bakeries
Local dog bakeries are some of my favorite places to visit with my dog. There is always something new to try. You get that local connection to other dog lovers in the area. Additionally you can usually pick up something extra while you are there, as they usually have a whole bunch of cool pet products.
While I know it won't help all of our readers, my favorite pet bakery of all time is Happy Dog Bakery in Downers Grove, IL. They do ship products, however that takes away some of that local charm I was talking about.
Are Pup Pies Safe for My Dog
Pup Pies have been a popular treat for dog parties for years. There are tons of great reviews for the product suggesting that the product has been safely used and enjoyed.
Product Recall in 2023
In April of 2023 The Lazy Dog issued what some call a voluntary recall of Pup Pies after multiple reviews on Amazon. The reviews stated that dogs became sick after eating the Original Pup Pie Birthday Treat. Pup Pies with the lot number: 022297 Sell By 102024, were affected.
In a Post on Lazy Dog's Website the company expressly discusses that there was no recall and the products were removed out of an abundance of caution and to perform testing. They worked with the FDA to confirm that the treats had no toxins, pesticides, e-coli, or salmonella.
Reviews also stated that Amazon Sellers were still selling the affected Pies after the company notice had been issued.
Final Verdict on Pup Pies
I personally would allow my pup to eat a Pup-Pie at one of his dog friends birthday parties. But at the same time, if I was throwing the dog party...I would much rather provide a treat that I either made and know exactly what is in it or a treat that was made by a quality local dog bakery. If you have the time and ability go with one of those options, however Pup-Pies are a great choice if you just want to order something and have it show up right away!
