- Highly recommend Suburban K9 Dog Training with Evan! He was super patient with our sassy and stubborn husky dog, Milo whom we rescued several months ago. From day 1 to our last session, Milo has become a lot more manageable when it comes to walking. Being only shy of five years, he has a lot of energy and is super strong and it wouldn't be fun walking with him, especially in the cold icy weather. Working with Evan, was a great experience. He would always ask what we wanted to work on each time we met, asked how Milo was doing and would give us the weekly homework assignments to practice. Evan was calm and patient with us and Milo and making sure everyone knew what to do and how to make proper corrections. Would recommend anyone who needs training to work with Evan. My 4 year old dog had a lot of behavior problems that made it difficult for me to have guests in my home. Within 4 sessions my dog is so well behaved and much more calm. I’m amazed at the difference in her behavior and so grateful for Liliana’s expertise. It felt like Liliana cared just as much as I did about my dogs success and reaching the goals that I had for her behavior changes. In our first session she asked me many questions to help clarify what my true goals were for our 5 sessions together. I feel those goals have been met since we started working together and I’m very grateful for the time, care, and skills that Liliana brought to each session.read moreread lessThe W.3/06/2023I couldn't recommend Nick and Suburban K9 enough! I worked with Nick during my 10-session package for my dog, Clark. He was able to build great trust with Clark immediately through obedience training, which was the foundation of the rest of the sessions we spent on more advanced behavioral issues. I saw almost an immediate change in my little guy and improvements day to day on his issues (re: door manners, counter surfing, and barking). I really appreciated Nick's knowledge about dogs and his ability to explain to me the "WHY" behind everything he does.read moreread lessGrace Dolot2/06/2023
- After dealing with Heartworm and a move, our dog Bones, a 2-year old pitbull/mix of everything was super stressed out and behaving unusually. We came to Suburban K9 with a list of things we wanted to work on with Bones, and by the end of our 10 lessons Bones has become a better dog than we could ever have dreamed! From the first session our trainer Evan took an interest in Bones & it was clear he cared about helping Bones become the best dog he can be. In 2019 we searched for the right trainer for a new puppy, after trying 3 other companies we finally found Holly at Suburban K9 in Chicago’s North Shore. We loved Holly so much, that when we got two more puppies over the last 4 years, we just knew we needed Holly, and she’s been with us each step of the way. Holly is a natural when it comes to training, she has an individualized approach based on all 3 of our dog’s personalities and different behaviors. Holly does an excellent job of balancing her client’s needs and expectations with their dog’s training. She treats our dogs like they were her own and we really love the socialization our dogs get from meeting other pups she is working with or when she has her sweet Anakin with her! She goes above and beyond! She is always available if we have a question or want to share our progress with her. - Money well spent! Addison is amazing. He helped us and our puppy. We rescued our puppy and within the first week of being home, we knew we needed some support. He was scared of everything and it was impossible to do any training because of that. We opted for a board and train package. He came back a new dog! He had confidence and overall, seemed happier. He learned obedience skills and his potty training issues had almost completely resolved! Addison was thorough and gave us the skills to continue on with training and skill building with our dog. Being older adults, we were very apprehensive about taking on this challenge. We really want our puppies to develop into friendly, social and obedient companions. Having Holly and Doug, our Suburban K-9 trainers, work with our puppies and us over the past two months has shown the potential for success and how to make it happen. They are professionals with amazing experience and ideas, combined with energy, discipline and compassion. We are beyond happy that we signed up for the Year Plus In Home Training program. Nick was honest about how much work Lily would need but did not oversell us. She had been very poorly socialized before coming to live with us and struggled with the effects of litter mate syndrome. I appreciate Nick’s direct approach for dog training. He identified her trouble areas and helped train Lily (and me) on how to be out in the world or have guests to our home safely and happily. We worked on recall, basic commands and walking nicely as well as LOTS of socialization with people in public and at home and with other dogs. I have owned dogs in the past but felt very overwhelmed with Lily’s needs as she was very scared and that fear maybe her seem aggressive. I now feel safe and excited to have guests to my home and take my dog on adventures and run errands. She is happier too! - I recently contacted Suburban K9 for help getting my 3yo German shepherd to be less reactive on walks as well as introducing her properly to my newly adopted cats. I was able to work with Brooke. She was able to see my situation at my home and give me a specific plan that would work best with my dogs demeanor and personality. I’ve already seen great progress on both the walking and the introduction process. I’m very hopeful that I can meet my goals with the tools that she gave me. I will definitely go with Suburban K9 for future training. She lovingly and confidently helped our new pitbull puppy acclimate to her role in our family as "little sister" to our 8-year-old Lab as well as loyal companion to our 4- and 6-year-olds. She was always willing to schedule "in between" sessions when we would have an incident early on in training that warranted some more immediate attention (resource guarding, food aggression, threshold training). And she even went above and beyond to help teach my children appropriate handling and commands so we could ALL enjoy the boundless love of our new family member. We worked with Holly Wengerski and we thought she was terrific. Admittedly, at first I thought she might be too tough (this is our first dog so we have no point of reference) but I very quickly realized that Holly had sized up how Ranger "operated" and in order to achieve the training goals we had for him (better walks- no pulling on the leash and dragging us along, stopping and refusing to walk, coming (the first time) when we call him, not charging at guests when they come to our front door, sitting and staying etc.) we had to be tough. We had several sessions with Holly, and though it was quite expensive, I believe it was money well spent. Appointments were easy to set up, Holly was always on time (early in fact), and each session I felt was very productive- she seems to have a great understanding of how dogs think and behave. We spent time in our backyard, walking in the neighborhood, at the beach, and at Hollyfeed practicing the skills in "real world" situations/environments. For several of the sessions we even had Holly's dog accompany us to help Ranger along with his training. Holly would then send an email with "homework" to practice. I think Holly is a great trainer, and after working with her, I am a much more confident dog owner and Ranger is a much better behaved dog.read moreread lessAllison Quackenbush11/03/2023We are so happy with our training from Addison! - To say we did our research is an understatement. We wanted to make sure that our dog, Grey, would be in an environment where she would be comfortable, cared for and trained with positive reinforcement and without fear. I own my own dog daycare/boarding facility and I have high expectations regarding care, comfort and respect for dogs. One of our clients at our daycare has one of the most well behaved, well trained dogs I've ever met. I asked her parents where their dog was trained and enthusiastically they mentioned Suburban K9. I knew this would be the experience we were looking for. Even better, Grey would be a guest in her trainer's home. The more we read about Suburban K9, the more I loved it and the more of my personal clients I found who also used the program. All of my clients who have used the program are extremely well behaved, sweet dogs. Our 4 month old rescue, Grey, had a problem nipping, counter surfing, jumping on guests and all of the other traits of an untrained puppy. We tried to work with her but were lost when it came to training. We decided on the 2 Week Board and Train with our trainer LaShaunti. Grey has been home a few days now from her stay and she is a completely different dog, in a good way. For the first time since rescuing our girl we were able to sit down as a family without Grey jumping on the table and stealing our food. Grey will stay in a down/stay position and we are able to answer the door and greet guests. We even sat on the couch and had popcorn during a movie night and she sat next to us without nibbling on our young children or grabbing a kernel for herself. It's incredible! LaShaunti was an absolute pleasure to work with. She has a very caring and calm demeanor and you can tell that training dogs is her life's passion. Every other day she would send photo/video updates to let us know how she was progressing which was extremely comforting. It was so cool to see Grey sitting at Home Depot or the Mall in a down/stay position without someone holding the end of the leash. We couldn't believe Grey's control! After the two weeks, LaShaunti came back to drop off Grey and teach us what Grey learned and how to continue to grow her training. She has a straight forward approach which I appreciate greatly. It was fun to talk with her about our dog and you could tell she loved her time working with Grey. We enjoyed working with her so much that we decided to continue 10 in home sessions with her over the course of the next year. This will help correct and train any new habits Grey may form in her teenage years and into adulthood. I highly recommend Suburban K9, especially trainer LaShaunti and our entire family is blown away by Grey's progress! We're now a few months out of the initial training and I cannot express how incredible the experience has been. During the board/train, we received great updates and communication (including pictures!) . Amber really took the time to listen to our specific needs and tailor her program to us and our dog - noting what our goals were and specific issues that come up in our lifestyle, etc. Upon coming home, we've had our follow up lessons (so helpful) and Amber is so wonderful in answering any questions that come up or providing advice/guidance on things that come up. Our pup (now 11 months old) gets to enjoy off leash walks through the trails, running free in fields, and joining us out at bars/restaurants. We truly cannot imagine a better trainer and feel so grateful that we worked with this company, and specifically Amber. If you're considering training, definitely go for it! You will be so glad you did.read moreread lessMegan G.12/30/2023Let me start my saying.... hands down 5+++ stars! STOP LOOKING ANY FURTHER FOR A TRAINER!! This is your stop! We had the wonderful Twila as our trainer (for both me and my pup Luna). I cannot even begin to share all of our success. Luna was 10 months old when we started the 2 week board and train with Twila. I missed Luna like the moment she left. And even cried the second day she was gone. But Twila made me feel so comfortable and reassured me that Luna was in good hands and was safe. All that outta the way... Luna is stubborn, whiney, and sassy. She's got an attitude for days and does things on her own time, and gives the funniest side eye ever! Twila would send us updates and pics of some of the daily activities. So when Luna came back to me.... I was like WOWWW!!! Is this the same dog!?. Like for real!!! Our main goal for Luna was loose leash walk and being more patient when we would give attention to our other doggy when we would get home. She was super rambunctious and shes quite strong. Luna was an attention hog. And would sometimes get aggressive and 'play bite' when she wanted attention back from us petting our other dog. 'Play bite'... well.. that hurts! So when I walked Luna (under the supervision of Twila), it was like a completely different dog. (Side note, Luna caused me a dislocated shoulder, and a torn rotator cuff). So naturally I was afraid to walk Luna. But I did, and Luna was fantastic. Like completely a different dog. She was/is still super skiddish, (anxiety), and she is very easily distracted. She walked great on the loose leash with me for the first time. Heel and stopping, sitting and loose leash, and stay. Twila gave us homework and when she came back a week later for a follow up, she gave me more tips and evaluated us and how we did on our homework. (Naturally the student (Luna) is gonna behave better when the teacher is around). The specific homework was really helpful. Then fast forward 2 weeks for our last follow up---- omggg!!! Luna had a complete melt down on one of our walks (during homework time) as she was completely freaking out when some larger dogs were barking at her behind a fence and loud noises as we were walking. She nearly ran into the street, and I literally was like running trying to control her. When Twila took us to the same spot of Luna's meltdown, she showed me exactly how to overcome that hurdle, and to keep Luna calm and get her back on track. My issue is that I felt bad for yelling at Luna, or having to be so hard on her, or be strict, but I realized I AM THE BOSS, not Luna. I had to learn to stand firm! And Luna feeds on our energy. Nonetheless, the best choice for us was definitely Suburban K9, and Twila is your gal! She was very responsive and answered all my questions and concerns. Super patient with me and that's so important to me. I felt I had all the support I needed. Look no further! Your choice is here.read moreread lessLori Bauder5/30/2023
- Addison is absolutely fantastic and has made such a difference in a very short period of time with our 10 month old, Ranger. Ranger was adopted just after Christmas and although a good boy overall, he did have some issues (reactivity, resource guarding, nipping). We have a two year old child that is half Ranger’s size and doesn’t fully grasp boundaries yet. Under those circumstances, we felt that it was imperative that we get Ranger into training and tackle any issues that he may have immediately. We opted to do the 2 week board and train with Suburban K9/Addison and I cannot even begin to tell you just how much of a dramatic difference it made. It was like night and day, and exceeded all expectations. We went from having a good dog to a great dog. Instant obedience, no more leash pulling, and substantial improvement in his comfort with other dogs and reactivity -on leash and off. I will say that while the board and train did wonders for Ranger, it is not a fix all. Two weeks is a relatively short period of time for any dog, but we were just so impressed with what Addison was able to accomplish that we have continued our training sessions with him even after board and train. We see improvement in Ranger every single time we have Addison out to work with him/ us. I have taken Ranger out and about as part of our daily training walks and it is always such a source of pride when folks comment on how wonderful and well behaved he is. I also have so much more trust with him playing with our daughter without knocking her over or doing any puppy nips. He is great with her and they have become fast friends. I can not say enough good things about Addison and Suburban K9- they are a great team and we have really enjoyed working with Addison in particular and getting to know him. Guido is a Lagotto Romagnolo. This is a breed you don’t hear about every day but we fell in love with his looks and personality. He’s also hypoallergenic, another plus. He will be 7 months old in 5 days. He was just over 5 months when we realized that we had a very strong willed pup. We had to call in reinforcements. Because Lagotto’s are “working” dogs (known in Europe for truffle hunting), Guido needs a lot of brain work. He’s tired if his brain is tired so he took to training very well. His brain is very active when training, he loves that! This breed is so eager to please, he loves verbal praise & pets for a job well done. Kati Del Pozo from Suburban K9 is everything we needed and more! She had experience in dealing with Lagottos which is more than I can say for other trainers we tried and even Guido’s vet. We can not recommend her or this board & train program enough. The two weeks allows your dog to be immersed in training in someone else’s home with their family & not in a kennel with a ton of other dogs. In a home they are faced with the same training opportunities as they are in your own home. It’s a very well rounded training. When your pup comes home, they’re so well behaved, it’s a dream. That was great inspiration for us to keep the training going ourselves. We never feel like we’re alone because Kati makes herself so available to us between our follow up visits and being able to reach out anytime with questions.
