History: The Goldendoodle is a “designer dog” that is a mix between a Golden Retriever and Poodle. There are several different types within the breed including F1 (50% Golden retriever, 50% Poodle), F2 (F1 Goldendoodle and F1 Goldendoodle crossed), and several others. They are one of the newest Poodle mixes, with breeding beginning in the 1990’s but are not considered a breed themselves.
Temperament: Goldendoodles are intelligent, friendly and accepting. They make for wonderful family dogs and are great for first time dog owners. Meeting the parents of your puppy will help evaluate the temperament of the one you choose. To help bring up an affectionate and obedient dog, Goldendoodles need the proper training, socialization and exercise to be well-rounded. Daily walks and obedience training are recommended to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
Health/Grooming: Goldendoodles produce low-dander and low-shedding but still require some grooming. Brushing about once every week should keep their coat in good shape. Only give baths when necessary to avoid the loss of essential oils and moisture. Goldendoodles are more prone to health issues such as patellar luxation, hip/elbow dysplasia, ear infections, allergies, and PRA. Make sure the parents are OFA and CERF certified to show they have been cleared for certain conditions.
