Puppies:
Our Board and Train Plus Program works well with any age of dog, but it was especially created for puppies. All dogs can change over time, but you're likely to see the biggest changes in the first year of a puppies life. With the Board and Train Plus Package we will be there to help guide your dog through puppy-hood and adolescence.
Although your little puppy may be a bundle of joy right now, we want to make sure he doesn’t turn into an adult dog with bad manners, fear, anxiety or aggression. Puppies come to us as wonderful little creatures that are ready to learn about the world. Our goal is to help them live up to their potential as happy well balanced companions that can go anywhere with their owners!
Adult Dogs:
When adult dogs are enrolled in our Board and Train Plus Program we use a modified training program depending on their current knowledge and issues. WHAT OUR BOARD AND TRAIN BOOT CAMP CLIENTS ARE SAYING
- To say we did our research is an understatement. We wanted to make sure that our dog, Grey, would be in an environment where she would be comfortable, cared for and trained with positive reinforcement and without fear. I own my own dog daycare/boarding facility and I have high expectations regarding care, comfort and respect for dogs. One of our clients at our daycare has one of the most well behaved, well trained dogs I've ever met. I asked her parents where their dog was trained and enthusiastically they mentioned Suburban K9. I knew this would be the experience we were looking for. Even better, Grey would be a guest in her trainer's home. The more we read about Suburban K9, the more I loved it and the more of my personal clients I found who also used the program. All of my clients who have used the program are extremely well behaved, sweet dogs. Our 4 month old rescue, Grey, had a problem nipping, counter surfing, jumping on guests and all of the other traits of an untrained puppy. We tried to work with her but were lost when it came to training. We decided on the 2 Week Board and Train with our trainer LaShaunti. Grey has been home a few days now from her stay and she is a completely different dog, in a good way. For the first time since rescuing our girl we were able to sit down as a family without Grey jumping on the table and stealing our food. Grey will stay in a down/stay position and we are able to answer the door and greet guests. We even sat on the couch and had popcorn during a movie night and she sat next to us without nibbling on our young children or grabbing a kernel for herself. It's incredible! LaShaunti was an absolute pleasure to work with. She has a very caring and calm demeanor and you can tell that training dogs is her life's passion. Every other day she would send photo/video updates to let us know how she was progressing which was extremely comforting. It was so cool to see Grey sitting at Home Depot or the Mall in a down/stay position without someone holding the end of the leash. We couldn't believe Grey's control! After the two weeks, LaShaunti came back to drop off Grey and teach us what Grey learned and how to continue to grow her training. She has a straight forward approach which I appreciate greatly. It was fun to talk with her about our dog and you could tell she loved her time working with Grey. We enjoyed working with her so much that we decided to continue 10 in home sessions with her over the course of the next year. This will help correct and train any new habits Grey may form in her teenage years and into adulthood. I highly recommend Suburban K9, especially trainer LaShaunti and our entire family is blown away by Grey's progress! THANK YOU LaShaunti and Suburban K9!read moreread lessLori W.1/26/2024Amber worked with us and our 7 month old puppy earlier this year (August), doing the 2 week board and train. We're now a few months out of the initial training and I cannot express how incredible the experience has been. During the board/train, we received great updates and communication (including pictures!) . Amber really took the time to listen to our specific needs and tailor her program to us and our dog - noting what our goals were and specific issues that come up in our lifestyle, etc. Upon coming home, we've had our follow up lessons (so helpful) and Amber is so wonderful in answering any questions that come up or providing advice/guidance on things that come up. Our pup (now 11 months old) gets to enjoy off leash walks through the trails, running free in fields, and joining us out at bars/restaurants. We truly cannot imagine a better trainer and feel so grateful that we worked with this company, and specifically Amber. If you're considering training, definitely go for it! You will be so glad you did.read moreread lessMegan G.12/30/2023Let me start my saying.... hands down 5+++ stars! STOP LOOKING ANY FURTHER FOR A TRAINER!! This is your stop! We had the wonderful Twila as our trainer (for both me and my pup Luna). I cannot even begin to share all of our success. Luna was 10 months old when we started the 2 week board and train with Twila. I missed Luna like the moment she left. And even cried the second day she was gone. But Twila made me feel so comfortable and reassured me that Luna was in good hands and was safe. All that outta the way... Luna is stubborn, whiney, and sassy. She's got an attitude for days and does things on her own time, and gives the funniest side eye ever! Twila would send us updates and pics of some of the daily activities. So when Luna came back to me.... I was like WOWWW!!! Is this the same dog!?. Like for real!!! Our main goal for Luna was loose leash walk and being more patient when we would give attention to our other doggy when we would get home. She was super rambunctious and shes quite strong. Luna was an attention hog. And would sometimes get aggressive and 'play bite' when she wanted attention back from us petting our other dog. 'Play bite'... well.. that hurts! So when I walked Luna (under the supervision of Twila), it was like a completely different dog. (Side note, Luna caused me a dislocated shoulder, and a torn rotator cuff). So naturally I was afraid to walk Luna. But I did, and Luna was fantastic. Like completely a different dog. She was/is still super skiddish, (anxiety), and she is very easily distracted. She walked great on the loose leash with me for the first time. Heel and stopping, sitting and loose leash, and stay. Twila gave us homework and when she came back a week later for a follow up, she gave me more tips and evaluated us and how we did on our homework. (Naturally the student (Luna) is gonna behave better when the teacher is around). The specific homework was really helpful. Then fast forward 2 weeks for our last follow up---- omggg!!! Luna had a complete melt down on one of our walks (during homework time) as she was completely freaking out when some larger dogs were barking at her behind a fence and loud noises as we were walking. She nearly ran into the street, and I literally was like running trying to control her. When Twila took us to the same spot of Luna's meltdown, she showed me exactly how to overcome that hurdle, and to keep Luna calm and get her back on track. My issue is that I felt bad for yelling at Luna, or having to be so hard on her, or be strict, but I realized I AM THE BOSS, not Luna. I had to learn to stand firm! And Luna feeds on our energy. Nonetheless, the best choice for us was definitely Suburban K9, and Twila is your gal! She was very responsive and answered all my questions and concerns. Super patient with me and that's so important to me. I felt I had all the support I needed. Look no further! Your choice is here.read moreread lessLori Bauder5/30/2023
- Addison is absolutely fantastic and has made such a difference in a very short period of time with our 10 month old, Ranger. Ranger was adopted just after Christmas and although a good boy overall, he did have some issues (reactivity, resource guarding, nipping). We have a two year old child that is half Ranger’s size and doesn’t fully grasp boundaries yet. Under those circumstances, we felt that it was imperative that we get Ranger into training and tackle any issues that he may have immediately. We opted to do the 2 week board and train with Suburban K9/Addison and I cannot even begin to tell you just how much of a dramatic difference it made. It was like night and day, and exceeded all expectations. We went from having a good dog to a great dog. Instant obedience, no more leash pulling, and substantial improvement in his comfort with other dogs and reactivity -on leash and off. I will say that while the board and train did wonders for Ranger, it is not a fix all. Two weeks is a relatively short period of time for any dog, but we were just so impressed with what Addison was able to accomplish that we have continued our training sessions with him even after board and train. We see improvement in Ranger every single time we have Addison out to work with him/ us. I have taken Ranger out and about as part of our daily training walks and it is always such a source of pride when folks comment on how wonderful and well behaved he is. I also have so much more trust with him playing with our daughter without knocking her over or doing any puppy nips. He is great with her and they have become fast friends. I can not say enough good things about Addison and Suburban K9- they are a great team and we have really enjoyed working with Addison in particular and getting to know him. - Twila from Suburban K9 did a great job with our pup! He did a 2 week board and train program and she sent us progress updates and photos every 2 days. Our dog learned so much and we would definitely have Twila train our future pups!read moreread lessTori Wisted7/30/2023We are over the moon with our puppy’s behavior after his board & train. Guido is a Lagotto Romagnolo. This is a breed you don’t hear about every day but we fell in love with his looks and personality. He’s also hypoallergenic, another plus. He will be 7 months old in 5 days. He was just over 5 months when we realized that we had a very strong willed pup. We had to call in reinforcements. Because Lagotto’s are “working” dogs (known in Europe for truffle hunting), Guido needs a lot of brain work. He’s tired if his brain is tired so he took to training very well. His brain is very active when training, he loves that! This breed is so eager to please, he loves verbal praise & pets for a job well done. Kati Del Pozo from Suburban K9 is everything we needed and more! She had experience in dealing with Lagottos which is more than I can say for other trainers we tried and even Guido’s vet. We can not recommend her or this board & train program enough. The two weeks allows your dog to be immersed in training in someone else’s home with their family & not in a kennel with a ton of other dogs. In a home they are faced with the same training opportunities as they are in your own home. It’s a very well rounded training. When your pup comes home, they’re so well behaved, it’s a dream. That was great inspiration for us to keep the training going ourselves. We never feel like we’re alone because Kati makes herself so available to us between our follow up visits and being able to reach out anytime with questions. Reactivity towards other animals and people became a cause for concern, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about how to address these issues. Fortunately, we found Suburban K9, and specifically Kati Del Pozo, whose remarkable skills and dedication have truly made a difference. From the moment we engaged with Suburban K9, their commitment to excellence and understanding of dog behavior was evident. Kati showcased exceptional knowledge and expertise in her role as a dog trainer. Kati took the time to listen attentively to our concerns, gaining valuable insights into our dog's unique personality and needs. Kati's approach was characterized by patience, compassion, and a true passion for helping dogs and their families. Under Suburban K9 and Kati's guidance, our dog underwent a complete behavioral transformation. Through the use of effective training techniques and a tailored approach, our dog learned to obey commands, remain calm in the presence of other people, and manage their reactivity towards other animals. Witnessing the progress our dog made under Suburban K9's tutelage was nothing short of remarkable. What sets Suburban K9 and Kati apart is their exceptional ability to adapt their training methods to suit each dog's individual temperament and needs. Kati's patient and personalized approach created a safe and encouraging environment for our dog to learn and grow. Additionally, Kati provided us with invaluable guidance and practical exercises to continue reinforcing our dog's progress at home, ensuring consistency beyond the training sessions. Throughout the entire training process, Suburban K9 and Kati demonstrated an unwavering dedication to our dog's well-being and development. We had researched German Shepherds before bringing Wolfie into our family, however I’m not sure any amount of research could prepare me for owning a German Shepherd puppy! While our puppy is very sweet natured, he is also headstrong and will chew or destroy things if/when he gets bored. He was also getting bigger by the minute and pushing boundaries. I heard about Suburban K9 on the playground during school pick up and when the other mom said “after 2 weeks away with a trainer it was like she had a new puppy” I knew that was what we needed. Enter Kati the Dog whisperer! After 2 weeks with Kati, during which she emailed pictures and updates, Wolfie came home a MUCH better behaved boy! Kati has been so amazing at answering all of our questions, and teaching us techniques. She has always been available by email or text, and it’s clear that she loves dogs and loves her job. Most importantly, our dog LOVES her! We’ve even boarded him with her for the weekend and it was so nice to know that our boy was being loved, cared for, played with and trained while we were away. The Dog Board and Train Boot Camp
Instead of generic one hour group classes that are often ineffective, our Dog Boot Camp/Board and Train Programs are customized to your dog. They are tailored both to your training goals and your dog’s personality. This training method ensures your dog's training is much more effective since the plan is created based upon you and your dog!
What's a board and train?
With a board and train our expert trainers bring your dog inside their home. They teach them a variety of commands depending on the package you select. They will also work on ensuring your dog behaves well around the home. Your pup is then returned to you and you are taught everything they have learned and how to maintain the training and behaviors moving forward.
Ideal age for boarding and training
We offer our Dog Boot Camp Program for dogs of all ages. We see a lot of young puppies and we also frequently train older dogs as well. The idea that you cannot teach old dogs new tricks is definitely not true! If your puppy is very young we generally recommend waiting until 16 weeks before sending them to us for training. We can cover so much more with a 16 week old dog than we can with a 12 week old dog!
Professional trainers to board your dog
When looking for a dog trainer, experience matters! Every dog is different and it takes a trainer that is truly an expert to understand your dog’s unique personality. Our experienced trainers help thousands of dogs every year—each exhibiting different personalities and traits. They can handle anything from shy submissive dogs all the way to excitable dogs who are always pressing your buttons and trying to run the household! If your dog has aggression or extreme fear issues we generally recommend In-Home Training in your house as a better fit.
Board and Train Plus tailored to your dog
Here’s how we go about tailoring our Dog Boot Camp program around your pup’s needs:
Learn your dog's training needs
The first step in our Dog Boot Camp program is when you fill out our custom dog behavior questionnaire. We want to know about all of their good and bad behaviors and habits as well as your training goals. This gives us a lot of insight on your dog and allows the trainer to start creating a training plan before they even meet you!
Observe your dog in their environment
The next step is when your trainer comes to your home to pick up your dog. This way, the trainer has the opportunity to see your dog in its home environment and discuss the specifics of what you are looking for. This works so much better than the trainer first meeting your dog in a kennel environment when you drop them off. The place where your dog is most comfortable is where the trainer can get the best grasp of who your dog is. The more the trainer knows about your dog, the better they’ll be able to help address your needs. We often see things during the pick up that were not on the questionnaire and we then modify our training plan accordingly. Our goal is to have a complete understanding of your dog’s behavior in your home so that we can deliver the best training results possible!
Starting your Board and Train Plus
After the pick up, your trainer takes your dog to their home and truly starts the Dog Boot Camp training process! This is a lot of fun and a lot of work for your dog and the trainer. They start working on each obedience command (heel, sit, stay, down and come) and work at the proper pace for your dog. If your dog doesn’t know any commands then they start at the teaching phase. If your dog already knows certain commands then they will immediately move to working around distractions (also known as proofing an obedience command).
The trainer also works to reinforce new behaviors with your dog. This includes things such as stopping jumping, stopping barking, stopping chewing, and teaching your dog how to live in a human household without anyone being stressed or frustrated. We address potty training/housebreaking and use our in house potty log/schedule to get your puppy or dog on the right track! This is where the dog behavior questionnaire comes in extremely handy. Your trainer will know what your goals are and will make sure to address each of your problem areas and goals. For example, if you mentioned jumping on guests as an issue, your trainer will spend a lot of time working around the front door to ensure your dog learns how to behave!
Using Board and Train Plus obedience with daily life
Your trainer will also tie obedience commands into daily life. They will practice having your dog obey commands even during heavy distractions such as the doorbell ringing, guests coming in, dinnertime and being around other dogs.
Board and Train Plus socialization
Our board and train programs are great for socializing your dog. During the board and train your trainer will make trips that will be fun for your dog. These will include places like dog parks, pet stores, and other public places where you might want your dog to behave. Plan on having a lovely brunch at a dog friendly restaurant? Tell your trainer and they can work on adding this type of trip into your board and train. We can even use one of your private lessons to have your trainer meet you to work in a specific place where you need help.
Personalized go home lesson
After your dog has learned and proofed their obedience commands and learned how to behave properly in the house it is time for them to return home! Your trainer will drive your dog back to your house and stay for 2 hours for your go home session. This session is incredibly important because this is the start of your training! You will see everything your dog has learned and be taught how to maintain their new good behavior!
Training follow ups in your home
Luckily, your dog's training doesn’t stop after the go home session! You get 14 additional training lessons to continue progressing your dog's training.
Additional 1 Week Refresher Board and Train
Around six months from your dog's initial Board and Train we will have another 1 week stay with the trainer to continue their training or troubleshoot any new problems you are struggling with.
Customized Lifestyle Adjustment Plan (LAP)
With the Board and Train Plus Program you will work together with your trainer to create a Lifestyle Adjustment Plan (LAP). Your LAP is a highly customized plan that helps you combine simple lifestyle changes, obedience training, and fun jobs that give your dog purpose. Your trainer will have worked with your dog on the details of the plan during the initial two week board and train. During your go-home lesson the trainer will review the details of the plan with you. The follow up lessons and refresher board and train will help ensure that the plan is working for you properly and you are happy with the results. This plan will help your dog live as a happy and harmonious member of your family.
Live happily with your dog
After your follow up training sessions have been completed, you and your dog will both be well trained and ready to live a happy life together. That being said, if you have any questions or concerns, we are available by phone for the life of your dog at no additional charge!
Board and train money back guarantee
We are extremely proud of our Dog Boot Camp program and know that you will be happy with the results. We stand behind our work, and our 2 week, 3 week and Plus Programs all come with a money back guarantee! We offer this guarantee because we know we have the right mix of dog training skills, experience, and customer service to make you a customer who is satisfied for life!
Should you worry about sending your dog for a board and train?
Many of our customer's feel like their dog is a member of their family. Our trainers feel this way too and will treat your furry best friend like a member of their family. We've found that it helps customers to align board and trains with vacations. This is a time that many people will be boarding their dog anyway. In addition being on vacation gets you out of the house and staying occupied. During your dog's stay our trainers will send you updates and pictures of your dog. Helping assure you that your pup is in the safe hands of a professional. These training updates help even if you are staying home while your dog is away.
Furthermore, unlike many smaller dog trainers our company is insured and has years of happy clients to back up our reputation. Still not convinced? Our In-Home training is a great option where your dog stays at home with you and you can decide how involved in each lesson you'd like to be.
