History: The Bernedoodle is a fairly new breed, thinking to be created in 2003. They are a cross between a Bernese Mountain dog and a Poodle. Being that the Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club but, they are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club. They were bred to become the perfect companions for families especially with children.
Temperament: Bernedoodles are hardworking, loyal and intelligent. When properly socialized they make great family dogs. They typically get along well with everyone including children and other dogs but may be hesitant around strangers at first. Some Bernedoodles may be stubborn and more difficult to train. They can have high energy levels and crave attention. An owner who is consistent and willing to give daily walks and obedience training would be a good fit for this breed.
Health/Grooming: Bernedoodles can vary in the look of their coats. Typically, they have wavy or curly coats that are low shedding. Some may have straighter coats that are more likely to shed and be less hypoallergenic. The curlier the coat of the dog is, the more difficult the grooming. Although they shed less, they will need to be brushed more often to help prevent their fur from getting matted, Bernedoodles may be predisposed to health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, skin allergies, hot spots, and eye problems.
