History: The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) originated in Germany. The breed was developed in the early 20th century to be used for herding, police and military work, and search and rescues. They are ancestors of old herding and farm dogs. German Shepherds have also been used widely in activities such as tracking, agility, obedience and Schutzhund.
Temperament: The German Shepherd Dog is very intelligent and highly trainable. They need an authoritative owner, dedicated to giving them the proper socialization, training and exercise that they need to be a well-mannered dog. Because of this, a German Shepherd would do best with a family who is active and willing to start obedience and socializing from a young age. Without the proper mental and physical exercise, they may become skittish and be more prone to developing guarding issues and fear biting.
Health/Grooming: The coat of a German Shepherd can come in a variety of colors but the most common is black and tan. There are three varieties of the breed that include, double coat, longhaired coat, and plush coat. They are a seasonally heavy shedder but do need to be brushed consistently to avoid constant shedding. Only bathe when necessary to avoid skin irritation from oil depletion. German Shepherds are more prone to diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia, digestive problems, bloat, splenic tumors, EPI and blood disorders. The most common issue found with this breed is hip dysplasia. If you are getting a German Shepherd from a breeder, always make sure the dogs are OFA certified.
